Modal split can be defined as the proportion of trips or travellers using different modes of transportation, such as cars, public transportation, walking, cycling or other modes. This study is aimed at analyzing the modal split of intra-urban trips in Kaduna metropolis for sustainable transportation. Data was collected through questionnaire, interview and field observation. Systematic sampling technique where two wards were skipped and then one selected was adopted in selecting the wards for the study. Thus, 11 wards emerged from the 34 within the study area. 400 copies of the questionnaire were administered in accordance with Yamane’s suggestion. Findings revealed that trip to work was the major reason people trip and recorded 41% of the total trips in the study area. Trip to work was followed by trip to school at 26%. Ceremonies and funeral trips were the least accounting for only 7%. On modal share, private car led the way at 23% closely followed by tricycle at 21%, while the least modal share was walking at only 6%. However, on modal share to work only, tricycle took the lead at 22% while the least was private motorcycle at 12%. The study concluded that private car and tricycle were the leading modals in the study area. It was recommended among other recommendations that efficient public transport system should be introduced to discourage car users from using cars so that carbon footprint emission would be reduced for sustainable transport and a better world.
