Abstract

Rainfall and temperature changes were investigated to determine their variability in Kaduna State for 37 years. The study analyses local scale rainfall and temperature trends and determine the influence of these variable on agricultural production. The meteorological data for the study were sourced from twelve National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) archive stations around Kaduna State from 1984-2021. Simple statistical measures of mean, standard deviation, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and correlation were used to discern the distribution of climatic elements considered in the study. The result indicated that: the State has unevenly distribution of both temperature and rainfall, the Galma catchment area has the highest increase in average temperature (0.964⁰C) and least annual rainfall, the Kaduna catchment has the second highest average temperature (0.872) and second highest increase in annual rainfall and Mada catchment area has the lowest average temperature (0.544) and the highest increase in annual rainfall (460.56mm). The southern parts of the State have higher rainfall and lower temperature compared to the northern and central parts. Rainfall intensities interpolated revealed an increasing length of return periods for all the stations. Stations 6, 7 and 8 has highest return with mean annual rainfall of greater than >212mm, while the least stations with rainfall intensity are 3, 4,5,9,10, 11 and 12, which is less than <107mm. The paper recommends that awareness programmes on recent changes in temperature and rainfall should be enhanced and, government policies related to agriculture should take into account the increasing nature of temperature and rainfall amount in recent years.
