Abstract

This paper is an attempt to overview the current understanding of hydro-pedology as integration between hydrology and pedology for effective soil management and sustainable farming. The paper provides an overview on the hydro-pedology as a new emergence field in soil science which is coined between the two ancient fields of hydrology and pedology. The former focuses on water movement and its distribution within the surface and ground levels while the later deals with the study of processes of soil formation, classification and characterization. The findings expressed how the five natural soil-forming factors are interconnected with hydrology through dynamic pedologic controls and properties, and also hydrologic impacts on soil formation, evolution, variability, and functions. In addition, it was revealed that hydropedology is applicable for soil management and sustainable farming through soil pollutants remediation in vadose zone, soils water storage and flow dynamics, defining soil morphological and chemical properties. However, hydropedology is linked to many challenges such as difficulty in prediction and mitigation of unfavourable hydrologic changes, undefined measurement and modeling of spatio-temporal scale, poor understanding of the links between pedology and hillslope runoff generation and strongly non-linear behavior at the scale of hillslopes respectively. In order to overcome these limitations and achieve effective understanding of the field, there is need for future research to navigate intensively in quantification of hydropedological interpretations, application of defined models at spatio-temporal scales, characterization of the intermediate vadose zone, hydropedological mapping, water resource management strategies and erosion initiation and development for effective soil management and sustainable farming production.
