Abstract

Members’ participation in cooperative society is very pertinent to its survival and effective performance. This study examined the effects of members’ participation in cooperative activities on the performance of the multipurpose cooperative societies (MCS) in Mubi Region of Adamawa State, Nigeria. Data were collected from 112 randomly sampled respondents from 13 registered and active MCS in the study area. These collected data were analyzed with both inferential and descriptive statistics; the descriptive statistics include frequency, simple percentage and mean, while inferential statistics used was multiple regression analysis. Test of hypotheses was through ANOVA and correlation analysis. The major findings are that, members’ participation in cooperative activities is influenced by their socioeconomic characteristics; also there is a significant relationship between members’ participation and cooperative performance. Meanwhile, 5-point Likert scale was used to measure their opinion on performance with 3.0 threshold (i.e. ≥ 3.0 is agree while < 3.0 is disagree). Therefore, the grand mean (3.34) indicated that the respondents (cooperative members) agreed that their cooperative society has performed in various areas which include satisfactory rate of surplus (4.06). Members’ welfare satisfaction (3.92); democratic governance and control (3.48); return on investment and assets (3.06); service delivery (3.35); growth in membership strength (3.61) and growth and expansion of cooperative investment (3.02). As such, in order to enhance and strengthen members’ participation and cooperative performance it was recommended that the cooperative members should show more commitment in participation in cooperative activities, also the cooperative should at all time get members involved in the decision making processes, finally, the cooperative should diversify their investment so as to encourage members to participate by investing and committing more resources with aim of getting some benefits like patronage rebate, dividends and interest.
