Abstract

This paper determines the threshold values of soil geotechnical properties for landslide occurrence in Benue State, Nigeria. Hence, the study investigates the threshold limit at which when exceeded landslide is bound to occur within the study area. The field observation method and laboratory analysis of soil samples were used for data collection on soil geotechnical properties and factor of safety for slope instability. The geotechnical properties of soil were analysed at the soil science laboratory of the Institute for Agricultural Research Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The stratified random sampling technique was adopted to select twelve (12) hills in the study area for data collection, which are Bako, Mbaamadev, Mkar 1, Mkar 2, Uga 1, Uga 2, Andibila, Uwokwu, Selagi, Ikwe, Dikpo and Angobo, where 24 sample points were identified. Percentage and mean were used to depict variation in the data set. Bivariate linear regression model was used to establish threshold values for landslide occurrence in the study area. The findings of this study shows that the critical threshold values are, 60% for liquid limit, 26% for plastic limit, 33% for plasticity index, 27% for cohesion, 25o for internal friction angle, 1.75 for factor of safety, 30.6% for plasticity index, 55.8% for liquid limit, and 25.7% for plastic limit. The study concludes that the threshold values of soil geotechnical properties for landslide occurrence in the study area have been exceeded in most part of area, thereby posing significant risk to landslide and its attendant effect on the inhabitants of Benue State. It is therefore recommended that the practice of terrace agriculture, construction of embankment or wall retention in hilly areas and road undercut should be adhered to. Also, the installation of early warning system and awareness campaign should be created by the Local, State and Federal Governments to enlighten the people on the danger of landslide.
