Abstract

Pollution from the use of power generating sets at Business Centre (Business Centre) within University of Benin Ugbowo Campus is capable of exposing students and business centre operators to carbon II oxide (CO) poisoning. For this reason, the study assesses the spatial distribution of carbon monoxide concentration and wind speed as a result of generator usage using portable CO gas monitor and anemometer respectively, while data were collected using GPS for a period of six weeks. A questionnaire was also administered to One hundred and seventy-five (175) persons to assess the impact of CO as a pollutant. The result/data obtained was analysed and interpolated using ArcMap 10.3.1 and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The responses from 175 copies of questionnaire administered were used to assess the impact of CO pollution in the Business Centre. The results showed that the mean concentration level of CO across all Business Centre was 12.5 ppm. CO concentration varied significantly (p < 0.05) with increasing distance from point source, while CO concentrations across the Business Centre did not vary significantly (p > 0.05). The opinions of respondents indicate that pollution from power generating sets affect mostly a few pollutant-sensitive BUSINESS CENTRE operators. The study recommends that the Nigerian Government upgrades the hydroelectric power (HEP) sector which would enhance uninterrupted hydroelectric power (HEP) supply by the power generating and distribution companies in Nigeria. The Management of the University of Benin should also consider investing in clean alternate source of power generation to augment supply by the national grid.
