Abstract

Changes in derived rainfall parameters are some of the key indicators of climate change in Nigeria. Flooding is one of the most frequent, costly and destructive natural disaster encountered by contemporary society. In this research, daily rainfall data for Lokoja, 1951-2020 were obtained from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Abuja and analyzed. The meteorological dataset was corrected for temporal in homogeneity, spurious trends and variable inter-dependencies to ensure long-term consistency as well as realistic representation of short term variability and extremes. The study applied descriptive statistical methods and time series trend analysis to analyze the data collected. Results showed that, climate change was real. Results on monthly mean rainfall showed that, December (0.6 mm) recorded the lowest, while September (217.6 mm) observed the highest hence, depicted severe flooding period. On inter annual rainfall, 1970 (692.4 mm) had the lowest, while 1999 (1767.1 mm) recorded the highest. Both the lowest and highest rainfall values were signs of climate variability and change. The year with above rainfall climatological mean (1190 mm) was mostly a flooding year. The period of wet spells was another factor indicating flooding in the study area with 2-days mean wet spells being the most frequent, while 10-days and above were not observed. The study therefore concluded that, rainfall was the major factor contributing to flooding in the study area, which was mostly urban. The following suggestions were made more and frequent rainfall, wet spells and flooding forecasts should be done; native languages and dialects should be used to enlighten the people on the issues of climate change and flooding; drainages should be kept clean always to reduce flood risks, people residing at the bank of River Niger should relocate upland at the peak of the rains.
