Abstract

There is an observed decline in crop yield from cultivated farmlands in Garin Wurkum settlement and this has become a serious concern for the inhabitants. This study therefore, analysed soil physiochemical properties from a cultivated farmland consistently applied with NPK fertilizer and fallowed farmland at Garin Wurkum settlement in Kashere, Akko LGA, Gombe State, with the purpose of comparing the impact of NPK fertilizer and fallow on soil nutrients, as soil management techniques. Systematic random sampling technique was used to collect 6 soil samples from the study area using core soil samplers at interval of 20m. The 6 soil samples were collected at the depth of 2cm, 15cm and 30cm and mixed together to have a single composite sample for each sampled point. Hence, three aggregated soil samples were collected from each of the four to five years cultivated and fallowed farmlands, making a total of six soil samples, and taken to soil science laboratory at Federal University of Kashere for analysis. Data was collected on some soil physiochemical properties in the study area, and the descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and paired sample t test statistics were used to analyse the data. Results of the study shows that the cultivated farmland has mean phosphorus value of (31.30 mg/kg), potassium (83.96 mg/l), calcium (77.90 meq/l), magnesium (48.7meq/l), nitrogen (1.55 mg/kg), pH (6.13) and organic matter value of 0.9%. While that of fallowed farmland has mean phosphorus value of 23.26 mg/kg, potassium (69.23 mg/l), calcium (52.03meq/l), magnesium (34.20 meq/l), nitrogen (0.94 mg/kg), pH (6.26) and organic matter (1.15%). Also, the major soil textural type in the area is sandy loam with good fertility level and drainage, capable of allowing water storage and adequate supply of macronutrients to crops for good yield. Moreso, the paired sample t test shows that the macronutrients do not differ significantly between the cultivated farmland and fallowed farmland (Organic matter, t = 0.58, p = 0.58), (Phosphorus, t = -2.09, p = 0.17), (Potassium, t = -1.70, p = 0.23), (Calcium, t = -1.52, p = 0.08), (Nitrogen, t = -1.61, p = 0.24) and (Magnesium, t = -3.199, p = 0.08). This indicates that the soil macronutrients in the cultivated farmland are similar to those from the fallowed farmland, and are adjudged to be moderately good. Hence, the study concludes that, the declining crop yield observed in the study area could be attributed to other factors such as poor seedlings, climate change and wrong farming practices. Also, NPK fertilizer application in the study area and fallow system have positive impacts on soil nutrient in the study area and therefore, it is recommended that both NPK fertilizer and fallow agricultural practice system should be used to improve soil fertility in the study area for enhanced crop yield.
